Annie was bored. She showered, she played with her food, she saw a bird fly into her window. She documented it all and called those spontaneous occurrences ‘art’. Annie presents a new body of work created during the lockdown period, capturing her interactions and experiences of life at home. Whilst the works are presented as photographs, they were not specifically made to be art - she views them more as documentation of spur-of-the-moment, everyday observations. She has also drawn inspiration from her experience and feelings of discomfort in the art world, coming up with her (way cooler) version of artwork titles and lists of unusual materials. Things that are mundane and not normally perceived as art have been turned into a collection of ephemeral ‘paintings’. She is interested in how art can be made and defined through the use of non-traditional media - domestic surfaces and overlooked objects. This is an opportunity to show myself as a subject gaining more ‘sentience’ in order to even reach the critical and reflective perspective I have today. I think it’s appropriate that I don’t have a true voice in this section. It leaves a sour taste. But this makes space for a coming of rage moment. Drawing on her own experiences of growing up on a council estate, Lay superimposed phrases from her childhood onto a sculpture of the building. “KNOCK DOWN GINGER IN A DIFFERENT BLOCK” - a phrase from a children’s game, becomes sinister in Lay’s mixed media sculpture. The moving text plays across the council block demonstrating myriad ways that children exist within this building. Lay’s work brings to light both the joy and darkness inherent in childhood, her wavering projections of text transforming her council block sculpture into a liminal, uncanny space. possessions, later assembled, which Molly collected throughout the year on her weekly walks in London. The installation features a recorded text and a performance of the artist spreading her wings and migrating from the Barbican’s landmark pavements-in-the-sky to street level. From cockatoos to pigeons, Molly is a keen birdwatcher. She believes that humans have a lot to learn from birds’ flight and seasonal migration, having flown away from her native Australia. Her installation features the flock of hybrid bird-human bodies she nested with during lockdown. The earth-bound and heavy figures contrast with the perceived weightlessness of birds and invite us to reflect on the difficulty of leaving the comfort of our nests to start again, fly above and feel light. For both birds and humans, this flight can be a condition of survival or an escape to set free. Feather light yet dragging a heavy load of memories behind you. These works come alongside Safiye’s sketchbooks and research. This project feels out what it means to be lost in a moment in time and how that can explode one’s experience of a particular space.
