Lay’s work explores the lived realities of buildings for their inhabitants. Drawing on her own experiences of growing up on a council estate, Lay superimposed phrases from her childhood onto a sculpture of the building.

“KNOCK DOWN GINGER IN A DIFFERENT BLOCK” - a phrase from a children’s game, becomes sinister in Lay’s mixed media sculpture. The moving text plays across the council block demonstrating myriad ways that children exist within this building. Lay’s work brings to light both the joy and darkness inherent in childhood, her wavering projections of text transforming her council block sculpture into a liminal, uncanny space.
